parlez-vous francais?

Just got back from dinner. It was pleasant, although nothing extraordinary. But there’s this one conversation we had, started out about Hillary Clinton. This leads to Bill Clinton, which gives us the following:

My Grandmother: “I hope they can find him a job in Africa and keep him there.”
Me: “Africa?”
Grandmother: “Yea. (pause) The blacks love him; he’s the friend of the blacks.
Me: “Ah.”
Grandmother: “They got him elected. He was put into the black hall of fame or something.”
My mother: “Mom! You’re so racist.”
Grandmother: “How is that racist? It’s true. What’s racist about it?”

My father and I were staring at each other; I was trying my best to conceal my laughter, and he was chuckling a bit, too. The entire this was just out of nowhere, and incredibly amusing.

Regardless of conversation, though, dinner was excellent. We ate at Chef Jean-Louis’s restaurant. I don’t think I’ve eaten at some place so fancy since… ever. I am particularly fond of some of the notes on the menu, which include:
“French cuisine is an art, and art takes time.” and
“Please do not ask to have any dishes altered, anything on the side, or cooked well-done or medium-well.”

I think Jean-Louis is Belgian, too, not French, but it’s all close enough.

yea, yea

Today was school, Mark’s house for half a movie, then home. We’re going out to dinner, we should be leaving momentarily, I’m surprised we haven’t yet. I’m feeling mentally sluggish. Something more interesting will come after dinner, I promise.
