’start your engines’

As said, camping was wonderful. We traveled the 40 minutes to Kickapoo State Park, then cruised around looking for the ideal camp ground for a bit. We decided on one that was probably the nicest in the area. It was right next to this steep, sloping hill that went down to meet an elongated lake (it looked kinda like a river, but I’m fairly certain it was either a lake or a dammed river). The hill was covered in wildflowers. I can’t describe how happy it was to be near a hill, after not having seen one in the past 7 months. Made me realize (or rather, remember) how fucking flat it is here. But, it also reminded me that I didn’t care too much (or I would have remembered sooner), so it didn’t bother me much.

The weather was perfect for the entire two days we were there. A pleasant temperature, cool enough to wear long pants and a flannel shirt at times, but it only got really cold late at night. I’m kinda used to camping in the cold, though, so it really didn’t seem bad at all. I wasn’t cold sleeping, either, although some of the others were.

We didn’t really do much there. Sunday we arrived a little before noon, set up camp, had lunch, and lazed around. We played some football, the kids went for a short walk. It was pleasant. Everyone played Sherades (spelling?) before dinner. We went for a night walk around 9:30, although we didn’t get very far. The kids stayed up late talking and acting like junkies; we eventually turned in around 1:30.

I got a solid 7 or 8 hours of sleep, but nevertheless I was exhausted on Monday. Naturally, we didn’t do much that day, either, but that didn’t stop us from having a little fun. On the way out we did go for another walk (slightly longer, but still fairly short since we were all so exhausted).

I’m hoping to get a few pictures from this trip. This is the kind of thing that makes a good memory.

For now, though, I’m off to make a few more CDs for Greece. I leave in 29 hours. I’m a little excited, to say the least. I hope I can get some sleep tonight; I slept so well last night after that camping trip I’m not really tired at all.
