money pinching assholes association

I got a cease-and-desist letter from the MPAA. Fuck. They got pissy about a West Wing episode I snatched in mid-November. I’m not sure exactly what they’re going to do (they contacted my ISP and my ISP said stop or we’ll cut off your cable service). Interestingly enough, this is the one thing they have the worst case about. You’re allowed to tape TV shows and I think you’re allowed to share these tapes with your friends, and that’s all this is. It wasn’t a DVD rip or anything, just a recording of a broadcast.

So now I have to think about ways to avoid this in the future. I don’t know how to mask my IP address in BitTorrent torrents, but I’m going to have to learn. I just worry that doing so will basically largely defeat the technology, since it would mean that remote connections would be basically impossible. Unless I set up forwarding somehow and filtered everything through an external IP address, but I don’t think that’s practical. Gotta read up on this. Anyone know anything about it, incidentally?
